RAM mount on steering stem bolt for Ninja 300
I was looking for a perfect spot for a motorcycle dash camera and found one, which was perfect, but there was one problem. The placement did not have any option to mount anything on the steering stem bolt. I thought of one solution, which I also found in Kawasaki 300 forum.
Several members of the forum bought an aftermarket stem bolt and had it drilled so that they can attach a RAM ball mount to the bolt. It looked great, but the aftermarket bolt cost about $30-$40.
Instead of buying an aftermarket bolt, I decided to use the stock one. I went to a local machinery, EDR Technologies Inc, and met with the owner Eddie Riveiro. I explained Eddie what I wanted to be done with the bolt and he said it will not take much effort and time and he'll get it done for me free of charge. Next day Eddie called me and later gave me the bolt perfectly drilled and aligned the hole for my project. Eddie was very helpful and professional. He said he doesn't mind helping out and could use more customers.
When I got home, I screwed the bolt back on the bike and installed whole RAM mount assembly. Installation took me about 5 minutes and my camera held very well on the mount.
To conclude, in my opinion, stock bolt can be used just like the aftermarket one is, saving you about $30. I've seen some people saying it may not be safe to drill stock bolt, but I personally don't see any issue. Definitely use this mod at your own risk.
